Adult Education & Ministries

It is very important for adults to continue to grow in the faith.  Many adults think that this can be accomplished by simply going to worship services.  Yet, worship services are not set up to provide a time to investigate ideas, share thoughts, and develop a spiritual and intellectual community to grow in the faith.  More intentional study and learning are needed to continue in spiritual health through the challenges of one’s adult life.

At Emmanuel we have four main thrusts in the Adult Education Program.

First is the Adult Forum which  meets each Sunday morning from 9-9:45am in the “Family Room” in the Education building (just down the hall from the Chapel and offices).  The Adult Forum is a group of adults who meet together for intentional intellectual and spiritual learning using a variety of methods.  We have studied Biblical Archaeology with the use of a Video Series; we have read several different books from authors who talk about contemporary issues of the faith; we have done studies of several books of the Bible; and we have experienced a spiritual group study of such Christian principles as those expressed in the Beatitudes.

In October 2008 the Adult Group will start meeting. Check here or on the Calendar and Newsletter pages in October for the starting date and time. Everyone is invited to join us!

Home Bible Studies have been organized from time to time. If anyone is interested in organizing a home Bible study while Emmanuel Church does not have a rector, please, contact the Wardens or the church office.

Seasonal Education Series –Each year during Lent (the season leading up to Easter) Emmanuel hosts a pot luck supper and a program, which closes with an informal evening worship service.  In past years we have had a wide variety of programs to study and discuss Lenten topics. Also included was guest speaker presenting an interactive program on Liturgy and Ritual as well as programs by people who had traveled to various sites around the world and introduced us to those sacred sites.

Baptismal Education groups are organized by the rector to prepare parents and godparents of infants and children and also adults who wish to be baptized for a Holy Baptism Service. Please contact the Wardens to schedule a baptism.

Sisters in Christ is a group for women who meet once a month. The “sisterhood” is for women who are in need of a time of pampering for their spirit and mind in the midst of a life full of the responsibilities and pressures.   In the “sisterhood” the women experience new ways to cope with stress and care for themselves and one another.  If women are feeling worn down by the pressures of life or just want to enjoy Christian fellowship, this is their group! Check the MONTHLY CALENDAR for meeting dates.

Other active groups in Emmanuel parish include, Altar Guilde, Women of the Church, Ushers, and Choir. People wishing to participate in the above adult activities and ministries may get the schedules from the MONTHLY CALENDAR,or by phoning (607/334-8801) or e-mailing the Parish Office.
